The Augustinian Convent
The Augustinian convent is located in the upper part of the village of Zumpano. It was founded, or perhaps rebuilt around 1510 by Father Francesco Marini, who was a humble birthplace in Zumpano on 8 July 1455 by Agostino and Tiberia. Dedicated to work in the fields and to prayer, he had decided to follow his vocation of consecration to the Lord. At the beginning of the 16th century (but the dates are uncertain), Francesco Marini da Zumpano, known as "fra Zumpano", had given life to the Reformed Augustinians, called, by his name, "Zumpani", and made the mother house of the Order, the convent of the Pietà, then in the territory of Soverato. The importance and role that the Congregation came to assume within a few years is part of the larger project of the Order to restore the need for a more genuine fidelity to the ideals of the origins. Between the end of the fifteenth and the beginning of the sixteenth century, thanks to the work of Francesco Marini, other convents flourished in Aprigliano (1490), Nocera (1500), Francavilla (1502), Bombile (1506). It is said that the convent of Zumpano was built last. He died in Soverato on November 1, 1519.
Someone spoke and speaks of "Beato Zumpano" but a cause for canonization never began, despite an attempt by the Augustinians in the mid-19th century.
