Fountain sculpture depicting the Mother Church
The last unfinished work in order of time is the sculpture of the fountain depicting the Mother Church. A small miniature masterpiece the church, reproduced and treated in detail, supported by a base that seems to represent a rock, or more likely a large tree. It rises overwhelmingly from the water with its majestic roots, its foliage and its foliage, together with some indefinite figures, barely hinted at in faces with faded features and a suffered and tormented aspect, projected into a fantastic world made of earth, of air, water and fire, in a suggestive scenario enhanced by the contrast of light and shadow. What the artist ideally wanted to represent and the enigmatic message he intended to convey unfortunately remains unknown. However, the tree remains a fundamental theme in the arts, since ancient times it has been a metaphor for positive virtues. It has its roots in the earth and the crown in the sky, regenerates itself thanks to the energy that circulates between these two elements. It is therefore a kind of bridge between heaven and earth.
