Statue of San Giorgio
The sculptural representation of St. George and the dragon stands out in the suggestive context of the homonymous square where the Historic Palaces and the Mother Church overlook. It rests on a pre-existing fountain built by local workers. The Christian martyr who symbolizes the good that defeats evil, is depicted by the artist with human and not idealized features as traditionally represented in the sacred images of classical iconography. Martinuzzi's San Giorgio is a Roman warrior with rough and non-angelic features, with a face hollowed out and tried by fatigue in whose features the artist wanted to impersonate himself.
