Statue of St. Nicholas of Bari
San Nicola, protector of Rovella, was one of the most illustrious saints who flourished in the eastern church. He is depicted in his earthly role as bishop of Myra, with the miter on his head and the crosier in one hand, while in the other he holds the book of the Holy Scriptures with three golden spheres on it. It is said that he was a man of great charity, defender of the weak, who would have used the family patrimony to help the needy by dispensing food and money and who would have given a dowry to three poor girls so that they could marry instead of prostituting themselves. The three golden spheres are in fact an artistic deformation of the bags full of gold coins.
